WORLD WAR II MEMORIAL ORGANIZATION

Who's involved, how was the memorial established?

The City of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, working with local Veterans organizations, formed the WWII Memorial organization through a series of funding commitments.  Eight years ago they hosted a national design competition, from which Larry Kirkland and Design Workshop were selected for the project.

For a number of reasons, the location for the Memorial was moved from its initial
location to the banks of North Shore Riverfront Park on a portion of the Great Lawn called the Bosque.  Design Workshop and Larry Kirkland took concepts from the initial competition design and created plans for a monument which is reflective of the new, enhanced location.  The design has been approved by the SEA, Riverlife, and the Art Commission.

The Memorial Board has recently received commitments from all four caucuses of the legislature totaling more than $2 million to support the Memorial.  In addition, through the leadership of Howard W. Hanna, III and The Hon. Jim Roddey, the Memorial Board is seeking private sector contributions to complete the project, as well as create a small endowment for the preservation of this important memorial. With your support grondbreaking will occur on Veterans Day 2011.
